Choose the media player format Individual files to export standard video or audio sequences as individual files that the recipient can view or listen to on computers with a standard media player installed. The computer must also have the codec you use for the export installed.

Name

Description

Content

Export video only, audio only, or both video and audio.

Format

Export video in AVI format or in MKV format. See also: MKV exports and multi-file generation.

Note

If you have not used privacy masking on video recorded in JPEG, MPEG-4, H.264, H.265, or AV1 format, no transcoding takes place during export, and the recorded video retains its original quality. If privacy masking is applied, the video stream is transcoded into JPEG.

Codec

Your choice of codec affects the quality and size of the AVI file.

You can change the codec, but Milestone recommends that you keep the default codec settings, unless you have a good reason to change them.

Note

The codec that you use must be similar to the one you have on the computer where you intend to play the exported video.

Include timestamps

Add the date and time from the VMS to the exported video. The timestamp is displayed at the top of the exported video.

Reduce frame rate

Reduce the frame rate for the export. Every second image is included, but the export is still played back in real-time.

Video texts

Open the Video texts window where you can create pre- and post-texts for the AVI file. These texts are added to all cameras in the export file and displayed as still images before (Pre-slides) or after (Post-slides) the video.

MKV exports and multi-file generation

When you export video in the MKV format, the export may produce multiple video files instead of a single continuous file. This happens if one or more of the following changes occur in the video stream during the selected export period:

  • Resolution change: If the video resolution changes during the export period, for example, because of dynamic stream switching or recordings captured at different resolutions.

  • Codec change: If the video stream changes compression format.

  • Privacy masking change: If privacy masking is applied, removed, or modified during the recorded sequence.

If an export generates multiple files, each file is saved in the destination folder with a sequential number appended to the file name (for example, Name_part1.mkv, Name_part2.mkv, and Name_part3.mkv). A playlist file is also created in the same destination folder, which you can open in a supported media player, such as VLC, to play all the exported video segments in sequence without interruption.
