What is XProtect Smart Client?

XProtect Smart Client is a desktop app that operators, security staff, and other permitted users can use to monitor and respond to events in your XProtect VMS system. It gives you access to live and recorded video, audio, and metadata from cameras and other connected devices and lets you control these devices directly from your computer.

In XProtect Smart Client you can:

• Watch live and recorded video from one or more cameras

• Respond to security incidents as they happen

• Review recorded footage to investigate past events

• Search for specific video, audio, or metadata

• Control PTZ cameras and other connected devices, such as access control units

• Personalize your views, PTZ presets, maps, and more in setup mode.

Monitoring video in views

Views are layouts you create to monitor video and other content across your site. Each view is a grid of items that can show a camera feed, a map, a webpage, a still image, a hotspot, or a carousel. You can create as many views as you need, for example, one per location or area.

Searching for video and evidence

The centralized search feature enables you to find cameras, alarms, events, bookmarks, and more in one place. You can use bookmarks to save important sequences, making it faster to locate relevant footage during an investigation.

Exporting and handling evidence

When you need to share footage with external parties, XProtect Smart Client has several export options. Evidence Lock prevents video from being deleted too early during an open investigation. You can also protect exported files with passwords and digital signatures to prevent unauthorized access.

Getting a situational overview

The integrated maps provide situational awareness by showing the locations of your cameras and devices. You can move from a site overview to a specific room and open live video directly from the map by selecting a camera icon. XProtect Smart Client supports both standard maps (based on images) and Smart Maps that use real‑world geographic backgrounds such as Google Maps, Bing Maps, and OpenStreetMap.

Access and permissions

What you can see and do in XProtect Smart Client depends on your role, assigned permissions, and the XProtect products or third‑party solutions your organization uses. For this reason, views, features, and controls can vary, even among users in the same organization. Administrators configure roles, permissions, views, and device access in the XProtect Management Client, and those settings take effect automatically in the XProtect Smart Client.
