License Mechanism
License Types
For standalone deployments, the license types are:
On-Demand (Camera) License
BriefCam users have licenses for a specific number of cameras that can be activated in the BriefCam system. When activating a camera, a license is consumed (and removing that camera does not resurrect the consumed license). This activated license is not a floating license, and cameras cannot be swapped in and out of this pool of activated cameras. Once a camera is activated, that specific camera is registered, and a license is consumed (a single license from the total amount of camera licenses purchased).
To activate an additional camera, an additional license is needed.
If you upgrade a camera or the camera is faulty, contact BriefCam Support to reset the activation count for the license.
RESPOND Channel License
There is an additional license for the number of RESPOND channels available. The number of RESPOND channel licenses limits the number of concurrent camera streams that can be processed simultaneously. Any of the activated cameras (enabled by consuming a camera license) can be processed in RESPOND – making the RESPOND licenses floating licenses (as they are not tied down to a specific camera).
Any of the activated cameras can be used as a RESPOND channel as long as the total number of RESPOND channels is lower than the number of RESPOND licenses.
Licenses for Nexus Multi-site Deployments
Using the Nexus Hub requires a separate license. There are two types of Hub licenses: Nexus Free and Nexus Premium. With the free license, the Hub can be used to view aggregated alerts from all sites. The premium license adds the ability to view aggregated RESEARCH data from sites.
In multi-site deployments, when a Hub user clicks the “Show original video” link for an alert, the user will be redirected to the site and will consume a session on the site as well as on the Hub.
RESEARCH Licenses
For information about the RESEARCH licenses, see the RESEARCH Groups section.
License Mechanism – Replacing a Camera
Administrators can replace discontinued/broken cameras on their own without it affecting the license count. For additional information see Replacing a Camera. This is valid for cameras that use the same name.
If the replacement camera is added to the VMS with a different name, a new camera license is consumed. Additionally, this replacement camera will be treated as a brand-new camera in the system. Old rules or processed video that were associated with the old camera (source) will not be associated with the new source. It is not currently possible to carry over processed data from the old camera to its replacement.
Note
Disabling or enabling a camera and adding camera permissions does not affect the licensing.
